The Reality of Suicide

“I hate my life!” A sentiment of many who have lost hope. The reality of suicide has recently caught my attention. People who fall into despair, yet escape the notice of others.

How can they be so sad and have nobody realize it?

The sadder part is the ones I’ve heard about recently are only 15-23 years of age. And of those I actually knew something about…I saw a future of hope and promise in them. What a shock to have their lives end so abruptly.

What made them so sad? What can we do?

In a calloused way, I can say they did a selfish thing. Thinking not of the harm and agony they’ll cause their family and friends, but only of themselves. In a sensitive way, I wish I could’ve been there to hug and reassure them, unable to imagine the torment they lived. In an adult way, I realize it’s hard to see the consequences tomorrow of what you do today, and that I would have shared. But in a wise way, I would have just listened and loved them.

…If only I knew.

What do you think? How can such sadness go unnoticed, and what can we do to help?

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1Th 5:11
