The Box That Brought Christmas Hope

The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:40

Break my heart for what breaks yours . . .The haunting tune and lyrics by Hillsong played in my mind as I watched the empty eyes, void of hope, that made up the orphanage population in Rwanda.

World Vision’s founder Robert Pierce earlier wrote the same in his Bible: “Let my heart be broken with the things that break the heart of God.” After meeting an abandoned and beaten child, he gave his last five dollars and vowed to send five each month to her teacher if she would care for the child.

Widespread hunger and hopelessness break the heart of God. Jesus wept for his people and left us with the charge to share with those in need. World Vision and Samaritan’s Purse offer opportunities to touch the lives of children in a very special way. The cost is minimal, but the yield is high.

As we enjoy this season of good cheer, may we reflect on those around the world who are not so fortunate. My ladies Bible study class lovingly packs 100-150 boxes for Operation Christmas Child each year. The joy in giving and effort of collecting all year is nominal compared to the smiles and laughter of the children who receive them. The boxes bring trinkets that will be treasured for years to come. And the words of the enclosed tracts and letters extend the love of Christ and a warm embrace.

Jesus reminds us when we do for those who have nothing, we have done for Him. His plan, His command was for us to make sure the needs were met of those who could not make a way.

Watching the incredulous eyes of the children at the Rwandan orphanage, daring to believe this great gift was for them, touched my heart in a special way. I knew the real gift lay in the Spirit of God who would touch their lives through the words of the tracts and the hope they would know when they received the love of Christ.

The smallest of efforts can have the greatest effect. When you consider your Christmas giving this year, imagine the eyes of the child who will open your box. Let’s reach out.
